Special Draft Preview Edition: Mock Draft

Following is my first attempt at an MLB mock draft. Whether this becomes an annual event remains to be seen, but it was a fun exercise nevertheless. The selections are not based on any inside information, just the knowledge (and speculation) that any fan can gain while surfing the net. In retrospect, it's probably more of what I would like to see happen than what I think will happen, but I'm going to throw it out there anyway and see what happens. I have a funny feeling that I'm going to quickly learn why these things are called "mock" drafts.

CIR MOCK DRAFT
1) Tampa Bay: Delmon Young, OF, California HS
2) Milwaukee: Rickie Weeks, 2B, Southern U.
3) Detroit: Kyle Sleeth, RHP, Wake Forest

5) Kansas City: Ryan Harvey, OF, Florida HS
6) Chicago Cubs: Michael Aubrey, 1B, Tulane
7) Baltimore: Nick Markakis, LHP, Georgia JUCO
8) PIttsburgh: Jeff Allison, RHP, Massachusetts HS
9) Texas: Paul Maholm, LHP, Mississippi State
10) Colorado: John Danks, LHP, Texas HS
11) CLEVELAND: Chris Lubanski, OF, Pennsylvania HS
12) New York Mets: Andrew Miller, LHP, Florida HS
13) Toronto: Brad Sullivan, RHP, Houston
14) Cincinnati: Manuel Vega, 3B, Puerto Rico
15) Chi White Sox: Aaron Hill, SS, LSU

20) Montreal: Eric Duncan, 3B, New Jersey HS
21) Minnesota: Ryan Sweeney, OF, Iowa
22) San Francisco: Conor Jackson, 3B, California
23) Anaheim: Scott Baker, RHP, Oklahoma State
24) Los Angeles: Jared Hughes, RHP, California HS
25) Oakland: Brad Snyder, 3B, Ball State
26) Oakland: Wes Littleton, RHP, Fullerton State
27) NY Yankees: Vince Sinisi, OF, Rice
28) St.Louis: Mitch Maier, C, Toledo
29) Arizona: David Aardsma, RHP, Rice
30) Kansas City: Jay Sborz, RHP, Virginia HS
31) CLEVELAND: Ian Stewart, 3B, California HS
2nd Round: Ryan Freirabend, LHP, Midview HS
3rd Round: Paul Bacot, RHP, Georgia HS
4th Round: Steve Lerud, C, Nevada HS
5th Round: Aaron Marsden, LHP, Nebraska

(Yes, I realize the picks above contradict the Indians stated belief that the strength of this draft lies in the college position players but it does fall in line with the best player available line of thought).

DRAFT BREW
In a Baseball America chat on Friday, Jim Callis noted that the Indians are considering John Danks, Jeff Allison, and Chris Lubanski with the #11 pick. At #18, the Tribe is focusing on Ian Stewart, Andrew Miller, Nick Markakis, Matt Moses, or Eric Duncan. At #31, Marc Cornell (O.U.) or Ryan Freierbend (Midview) could be the pick.

Ross Lewis signed with the Angels as a DFE (31st round). He was the Indians 41st round pick in 2001.

The Indians invited Massachusetss RHP Jeff Allison to a pre-draft workout last Thursday. No word on whether he actually attended.

Jim Ingraham looks at past drafts in the LMJ.
